It’s summer time and what’s better on a hot day than a sweet treat? Once you start you just can’t seem to quit munching on every mouth-watering, sweet snack you see! But what’s a good bowl of ice cream every once in a while right? right. The real problem is usually the kind of treats you don’t think about and having those sweet snacks in moderation.
How often would you say you’ve been out and about and ordered a large soda to wash down your burger? Starbucks makes some amazing drinks, there’s no doubt but have you ever taken a peak at the nutritional content in that delicious Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino you order every morning? There are a few different studies that suggest there is a link between obesity and drinking sugary beverages, like soda (“Too much of a sweet thing”). Excess sugar definitely affects one’s blood pressure as well as cholesterol levels (“Too much of a sweet thing”). Ask yourself, How much sugar do I realistically drink in one day? It’s important to note that the most common source of sugar in an individual’s diet is not the important natural sugars in fruit, but sugar in soft drinks, cakes, candy, and sauces. This summer when you have that unquenchable urge to grab something sticky-sweet, take a moment and consider: an apple a day, instead of that Coke, might really keep the doctor away!

- While natural sugars are healthy, it is best to stay away from processed sugar such as in soda, snacks, and ice cream
- While you may not be able to stay away from processed sugar, take it in moderation
- Many people overload their system with sugar, and it becomes a toxic cycle, described to the left in the picture.
- Taking sugar out of one’s diet is unhealthy because you will crave more later
- At the party instead of having cupcakes and ice cream, choose one. You will thank me later and feel better about it.
- If you are craving that sweet and you already have consumed one, have some fruit and your sweet craving will be settled
